The company hopes its new Ultra handset lineup, expansion into emerging markets, and troubles at rival Motorola will add up to notable gains
By Moon Ihlwan South Korea's Samsung Electronics has won its place as an innovator of multifunctional mobile phones in the fiercely competitive handset industry. Its global sales are still only one-third those of global leader Nokia, thanks to a slow expansion into fast-growing emerging markets. No more. Taking advantage of Motorola's weakness, Samsung is making an all-out effort to snatch market share both in emerging economies and developed countries.The No. 3 handset maker is rolling out svelte yet feature-packed phones in the U.S., Europe, and some developed Asian markets while offering affordable phones in India, China, and Latin America. In the first quarter of this year, Samsung was the only one of the top five mobile-phone makers to post sales growth from the previous quarter.
