Samsung's iPhone Challenger

Samsung Mobile announced the Samsung Instinct at CTIA last week. Hailed by many as the “iPhone killer” (or at least a worthy alternative) the device offers full touch screen functionality and promises to accelerate the user experience by enabling access to commonly used applications and contacts with a single finger tap.

The device, available exclusively from Sprint, will run on the carrier’s EV-DO Rev A network, enabling users to browse the Web, access business or personal e-mail, share pictures, listen to commercial-free radio and more at broadband speeds.

The crew at Gizmodo seems to like the Samsung offering.

The device will come with a 2GB microSD card which is good for 2,000 songs or so from Sprint’s Music Store, two batteries offering up to 5.75 hours of continuous talk time each, battery charging sleeve, travel charger, USB cable, 3.5mm headphones with built-in microphone, and leather case with stylus.

Pricing has yet to be determined.

Oh… and the Instinct was awarded best of show at CTIA too.

Samsung's Mobile Market-Share Grab

Samsung's Mobile Market-Share Grab
The company hopes its new Ultra handset lineup, expansion into emerging markets, and troubles at rival Motorola will add up to notable gains
By Moon Ihlwan South Korea's Samsung Electronics has won its place as an innovator of multifunctional mobile phones in the fiercely competitive handset industry. Its global sales are still only one-third those of global leader Nokia, thanks to a slow expansion into fast-growing emerging markets. No more. Taking advantage of Motorola's weakness, Samsung is making an all-out effort to snatch market share both in emerging economies and developed countries. The No. 3 handset maker is rolling out svelte yet feature-packed phones in the U.S., Europe, and some developed Asian markets while offering affordable phones in India, China, and Latin America. In the first quarter of this year, Samsung was the only one of the top five mobile-phone makers to post sales growth from the previous quarter. Here's a quick look at some of the Korean company's phones.Read the storyReader comments

NEC Selected as Super 3G Handset Vendor for NTT DoCoMo

Above shows an NEC current 3G handset.
ASIA Japan : NEC will develop equipment for Super 3G handsets, following a request for proposal from NTT DoCoMo, NEC plans to deliver commercial Super 3G mobile handsets in 2010 to NTT DoCoMo.
The Super 3G standard is expected to provide super fast downlink data rates of over 100Mbps and uplink data rates of over 50Mbps, low-latency data transmission and improved spectrum efficiency. Super 3G features highly advanced versions of high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) and high-speed uplink packet access (HSUPA), which are W-CDMA packet transmission technologies standardized by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). The 3GPP, a telecommunications standards body, has been in discussion to standardize Super 3G under the name Long Term Evolution (LTE). The 3GPP plans to release LTE's final specifications in 2007, but has completed most of the basic system designs at its June meeting. DoCoMo is thus set to begin developing equipment for practical application of the Super 3G technology and started to accept supplier proposals from July this year.
Aiming to complete the development of a communication platform to realize the Super 3G mobile handsets within 2009, NEC, together with Panasonic Mobile Communications Co., Ltd. and Fujitsu Limited, will actively promote development efforts. As the main contractor of the joint development, NEC will manage all of the joint development of the Super 3G communication platform with Panasonic Mobile Communications and Fujitsu.

CTIA 2007: Thunder Super Radio HiFi Phone bolts ghetto-blaster onto mobile phone

The major mobile manufacturers have been upstaged at CTIA 2007 by the gloriously-sounding Thunder Super Radio HiFi phone. As you can see form the pic, the Thunder phone is a normal mobile phne on one side, but rather than kitting the back out with a camera, they've bolted on what looks like an old '80s ghetto blaster!
More pics of the Thunder Super Radio HiFi phone after the jump.
The Thunder phone comes with a 1.3 megapixel camera, large 2.4" TFT screen, and can play MP3 and MP4 files. All this is pretty standard for a mobile phone, of course, but it's the huge speaker on the back that makes this phone stand out.

No further details on the Thunder phone, and you won't be seeing it outside of Taiwan any time soon, which is a shame, as phone's like this give great entertainment value of nothing else!

Nanotechnology+Nokia= Super Mobile phones

Have you ever imagined seeing these specs on a mobile phone:
Self Cleaning - the phone cleans by itself
Self powered - the phone derives its energy/power from the sun, water, or air.
Sense the environment - the phone will tell you the weather, the amount of air pollution present, etc.
Flexible - bend but not break
Transparent - “see through” phones
Nokia says its possible. Through the use of Nanotechnology.
Nokia together with the University of Cambridge (UK), has developed this concept called Morph.
Morph is a concept that demonstrates how future mobile devices might be stretchable and flexible, allowing the user to transform their mobile device into radically different shapes. It demonstrates the ultimate functionality that nanotechnology might be capable of delivering: flexible materials, transparent electronics and self-cleaning surfaces. Dr. Bob Iannucci, Chief Technology Officer, Nokia, commented: “Nokia Research Center is looking at ways to reinvent the form and function of mobile devices; the Morph concept shows what might be possible”.

iPhone vs. LG Prada (Again)

So LG's Mobile Handset R&D Center chief Woo-Young Kwak believes that the iPhone is a "copycat" of the Prada handset they put out but a few weeks earlier (later, officially speaking), and to rather less fanfare. Now, there's a certain "Lost In Translation" factor to be wary of: even if he said it, we don't know the context or humor in which the notion was expressed. Top brass at big companies are more apt to slip out a certain dry innuendo rather than bull-headed accusations of plagiarism; Gadget Lab's got messages on PR peoples' answerphones, and we eagerly await LG's clarification and Apple's reaction. LG proved a couple of days ago that they're not shy with the lawyers, but it's hard to see them doing anything stupid with them—which makes the idea the comments were "serious" seem all the more doubtful.
In the meantime, enjoy our side-by-side and decide for yourself. It might be a couple of mm off, but you get the jist.
To recap, the LG's screen is 3" and has a 240x400 resolution; the iPhone's is 3.5" and 320x480. Both have Bluetooth, the iPhone adds WiFi. The LG is 99mm long and 54 wide, while the iPhone is 115mm long and 61mm wide. Both are 12mm deep. The LG will be about $750 unsubsidized, while the Apple comes with an AT&T contract for $500 or $600, depending on model.
My view: iPhone's the beauty, Prada's the cutie.

Nokia ‘Gold Arte’ To Join the 8800 Arte Series

I have to admit, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) isn’t my brand/area of expertise, but when I noticed this device… I first thought… ‘BLING!’… and then I thought, I’ve got to write about this one. Looks luxurious.
Nokia has added a new model to their 8800 Arte series. The new model (it’s a slider) is called the ‘Gold Arte’ and looks pretty much the same as the Sapphire Arte, with one exception. It’s gold plated. Specs are similar to other devices in the Arte series, but when you buy a phone coated in 18-carat gold, I’m not so sure you’re concerned about the features.
Nokia Gold Arte key specs:
4.3 x 1.8 x 0.6 overall dimensions
5.3 oz
Color OLED display at 240×320
Lithium-Ion battery
3.33 hours talk time, 300 hours stand-by time
No pricing or release date details have been found to date. But you can bet your bottom dollar the thing will run you a few bucks. The Nokia Carbon runs around $1,350… So think about that for a second

NOKIA 3110

Nokia has already done a "greener" phone with the Nokia 3110 Evolve model, but it also has a "futuristic Nokia Eco Sensor Concept" phone, reports Unwired View. It says:
Nokia Eco Sensor concept includes a wearable sensor unit that will house a number of optional sensors to monitor environment, health and local weather conditions, a dedicated mobile phone and a set of dedicated mobile software applications and services. The carrying strap made from solar cells will power the sensor unit and all the devices will "talk" to each other via low power near field radio technologies.
Concept phones are like concept cars: not designed for production. But the Eco shows the sort of things Nokia is considering for future products. And with the baby boomer population now entering old age, it's probably right on the money with the idea of incorporating health monitoring.

Azingo Mobile

Azingo MobileThe Azingo Mobile stack is positioned as the first "complete" Linux phone stack -- from kernel to application layer -- that also complies with LiMo specifications. McLaughlin said, "We're quite active in LiMo, which we see as one of centers of the Linux mobile universe. But you need more than what's in the first release of LiMo. [Azingo Mobile] conforms to and uses technology from Limo, but it's a superset, offering more of the middleware suites, and it has an app suite and kernel pre-integrated."

Java FX Script is the new name of the F3 scripting language by Chris Oliver. The language combines declarative SVG-style interface descriptions with java-like scripting code. With proper tools support it should empower web designer's creativity.
Chris Oliver repeated his Java FX script session (TS-3420) three times, each time it was full. Needless to say, I couldn't get in and missed the demos. Chris has a few demos posted in his blog and they look cool! It took me five attempts to shoot all space invaders .
One complaint: the new JavaOne schedule builder feature wasn't helpful. The overflow rooms last year at least ensured that everyone gets to hear the talk which is full. This year you simply had to be either quick or lucky to get into a popular session. The new Schedule Builder feature did not work as advertised. The card reader at the session door was not synchronized with the database and quite a few folks (including me) could not get in despite going through the pre-registration hassle.
It will be interesting to see how Java FX will transform Java conformance testing. One of the promises of the Java FX technologies is better compatibility and little or no fragmentation. Since there is no way a single binary (or even a binary built from the single source) can run on all devices unmodified, there is a clear need to have a new conformance or compatibility testing program.
Another big announcement is Open JDK. JDK is catching up with Java ME with a widely expected announcement of open source JDK. Mark Reinhold presented the details in his project report (TS-2800). Opening up the JDK source is expected to change the way Java conformance testing is conducted. Patrick Curran writes about this in his blog.
